Wow! First man ‘functionally cured’ of HIV

Wow! First man ‘functionally cured’ of HIV

WOW! Since HIV was discovered 30 years ago this week, 30 million people have died from the disease, and it continues to spread at the rate of 7,000 people per day globally, the UN says.

There's not much good news when it comes to this devastating virus. But that is perhaps why the story of the man scientists call the "Berlin patient" is so remarkable and has generated so much excitement among the HIV advocacy community.

Timothy Ray Brown suffered from both leukemia and HIV when he received a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Berlin, Germany in 2007. The transplant came from a man who was immune to HIV, which scientists say about 1 percent of Caucasians are. (According to San Francisco's CBS affiliate, the trait may be passed down from ancestors who became immune to the plague centuries ago. This Wired story says it was more likely passed down from people who became immune to a smallpox-like disease.)

What happened next has stunned the dozens of scientists who are closely monitoring Brown: His HIV went away.

"He has no replicating virus and he isn't taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV," his doctor Gero Huetter told Reuters. Brown now lives in the Bay Area, and suffers from some mild neurological difficulties after the operation. "It makes me very happy," he says of the incredible cure.

The development of anti-retroviral drugs in the 1990s was the first sign of hope in the epidemic, transforming the disease from a sudden killer to a more manageable illness that could be lived with for decades. But still, the miraculous cocktail of drugs is expensive, costing $13 billion a year in developing countries alone, according to Reuters. That figure is expected to triple in 20 years--raising the worry that more sick people will not be able to afford treatment.

Although Brown's story is remarkable, scientists were quick to point out that bone marrow transplants can be fatal, and there's no way Brown's treatment could be applied to the 33.3 million people around the world living with HIV. The discovery does encourage "cure research," according to Dr. Jay Levy, who co-discovered HIV thirty years ago, something that many people did not even think was possible years ago.

You can watch Brown talk about his cure in this CBS video report.

TIMAYA BAGS AN AMBASSADOR AWARD FROM UNITED NATIONS

In apparent recognition of his propagation of peace in the restive Niger Delta, consistent hitmaker, Enetimi Odom, the musician popularly known as Timaya, has been appointed a Peace Ambassador by the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace, IIFWP, a division of the United Nations. According to Dr. Hak Ja Haan Moon, co-founder of the IIFWP, Timaya was especially chosen for this honour because he is “One of those individuals whose lives exemplify the ideal of living for the sake of others, and who dedicate themselves to practices which promote the founding ideals of the IIFWP.” Reacting to the honour, Timaya says, “I am happy. Honestly, I am. This goes to show that the ideals I am using the instrumentality of my music to preach are not in vain. It is even a good thing that the President is from that region which means that things will surely get better. I thank those who deemed it expedient to make me a Peace Ambassador and I promise not to relent in this struggle. ” Moon says further that the new Ambassador for Peace, like others from all over the world, is expected to contribute to the fulfilment of the hope of all ages, a unified world of peace wherein the spiritual and material dimensions of life are harmonized. Thus, Timaya joins a short list of highly rated celebrities including D ’banj, Ini Edo and Ramsey Noah who are also UN Ambassadors. Interestingly, this recent honour is coming a few weeks after the Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa as he is also known was specially recognised and appreciated for his outstanding contributions to the social and cultural development of Sierra Leone at the country’s 50th Independence anniversary. Meanwhile, starting from June 1st, Timaya and his Dem Mama Soldiers will be on a 10-country tour of Europe spanning Holland, Greece, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and France among others. During the trip, he will perform at the FIFA Women ’s World Cup holding in Germany between June 26 and July 17 where the Super Falcons of Nigeria are participating.

NETPod: Modenine Returns With New Single ‘I’m Back’

NETPod: Modenine Returns With New Single ‘I’m Back’

Modenine is without a doubt the most respected hip-hop act in Nigeria. With about seven mixtapes and four albums, who can stand toe-to-toe with the punchline king? Your guess is as good as mine – Nobody.
Modey who recently returned to the country in anticipation of the release of his fifth studio Lp ‘Commercial Break‘ has dropped the official single coincidentally titled ‘I’m Back‘. Fans and followers of the hip-hop icon will pleased to know that their ‘King’ has returned.
I’m back‘ surprisingly is an up-beat tune but Modey holds the track by the neck as he rides along the beat comfortably. He rhymes about his return and what he intends to accomplish. With lines like ‘The mice all play when the cat is out/I own this building, back out!, you know Nigel Benn is not joking.
Modenine might not be at his best on this Bayorz Music-laced-beat as the production isn’t reminiscent of the rapper’s customary style but vanish any thoughts of under performance as we all know the ‘nine’ is here to stay.

The boys are yet to make an official announcement, but sources close to them tell us barring any last minute changes, Drake will be co-headlining the Psquare album concert holding in July.
According to SuagzEmpire.Kum sources, it’s not the first time bestsellers Psquare are having an international act on their side. An earlier concert and album deal with Busta Rhymes in 2008 did not materialise because negotiations broke down.
The P Square concert is billed for the Expo Centre of Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos.
